Steve Proctor is the managing editor of The San Francisco Chronicle. Before coming to the Chronicle in 2003, he worked for 23 years at The Baltimore Sun in various capacities and was Deputy Managing Editor of the newspaper when he left for San Francisco.
He has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and history from American University on Washington and was a John S. Knight Fellow at Stanford University in 1998-1999. Steve’s previous non-profit work includes founding an organization dedicated to preserving the home of The Sun’s most famous writer, H.L. Mencken. He is married to Mara Proctor and they have two children, Bob and Cori.
