Our Volunteers

Our awesome volunteer chef, Joan Chaplick, has been volunteering with us since 2002!

Joan (and her very old greyhound Shout) come every Thursday and cook delicious meals that have become such a source of comfort for all of the Home Away students. She has helped train new Volunteer Chefs and helped us with lunches for all of our Summer Program. Home Away loves Joan!!

Volunteering with Home Away

Thank you so much for your interest in becoming a volunteer at A Home Away From Homelessness. Poverty and homelessness are crises that affect us all, and volunteering is one way to directly contribute to a better community. Our dedicated volunteers make what we do possible!

Our programs are intended to provide a feeling of home for our kids. We seek to provide a family atmosphere, one where reliability and consistency are valued. Therefore, we limit engagement to volunteers with whom the kids can build relationships over time. We are currently looking for committed individuals who have an interest in providing ongoing support in the following ways:

  • School House (Tutor):  The School House is an academic enrichment after-school program for middle and high-school-aged youth.  Volunteer tutors work one-on-one with students to help them complete and understand school assignments,  practice academic skills, and build meaningful relationships. The School House meets Monday-Thursday in Upper Fort Mason, Bldg. #33, San Francisco. Tutors are asked to attend from 5:00 to 6:30 pm, and are always invited to stay for dinner.

    Specialized Volunteer Requests:

    • Bilingual tutors (Cantonese, Spanish)

    • English literacy tutors

    • Tutors able to work with students on skills like Graphic Design, Computer Engineering, Painting, Content Creation, Social Media Marketing, etc.

    School House (Chef):
We are always in need of chefs who can step in and guest cook for the program. You can cook at home and bring a prepared meal by 6:15 pm, or use our kitchen to cook. We aim to have dinner on the table at 6:30 p.m. each night.

Beach House (Trip Assistant):  Located in Golden Gate National Recreation Area in the Marin Headlands, the Beach House is a cozy cottage where children can escape the restrictions of their socio-economic conditions, find support and security, and experience the serenity and wonder of nature. Weekday hours are approximately 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Weekend hours are 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

If you, or anyone you know, are interested in volunteering at Home Away, please email volunteers@homeaway.org and apply below.

Group Volunteer Opportunities

Our programs are designed to provide a feeling of home for our kids so we limit direct engagement with the children we serve to individual volunteers who they can build relationships with over time.

However, our School House and Beach House facilities are always in need of special projects, such as painting, landscaping, organizing and deep cleaning.  In addition, we welcome volunteers to help with administrative needs such as mailings or assistance with fundraisers. To plan an event for your team, or to learn more about administrative volunteer opportunities, please email admin@homeaway.org or visit our Sponsor page.
